Few words of Malagasy

Before 19th century and the translation of the Bible from English into Malagasy by 1820, Madagascar had no official writing in spite of the existence of manuscripts Antemoro in Sorbian, derived of the Arab, which dealt especially with divinatory art, black arts and traditional pharmacopoeia.

The history of the country, the habits and customs were orally passed on from generation to generation, the “oral tradition” as we say. The education was made through the games, tales and legends.

The Bible is thus, the first book written in Malagasy. The alphabet is the occidental alphabet but consists only of 21 letters instead of 26. There are thus no letters c, q, u, x and w in the Malagasy language. The verb to be does not exist in Malagasy.

The structure of the sentence in Malagasy is the following one: verb + complement + subject (contrary to French: Subject + verb + complement).

Some Tips for speaking Malagasy:

– The letter o is pronounced ou
– The letter s is still wheezing
– The letter e is pronounced e
– The letter g is pronounced gue before all vowels
– Final vowels are silent or aspirated ( less pronounced )

Eg omby (beef or zebu) is pronounced “Oumbe”, “o” pronouncing itself “ou” and “y” final being dumb.
