What drink Malagasy ?

– The Ranon’ampango or ranovola

This is the “rice water” produced by boiling water with the rest of the burned rice stuck to the bottom of the pot. Effective against dehydration problems and against diarrhoea. It is a good way to drink the water which became healthy.

– The Trembo (palm wine)

In most villages along the coast , there is what is called “Trembo” which is actually palm wine. Its production is quite simple as it is to collect a liquid from young coconuts and fruit to ferment. It is necessary to become used to the smell of fermentation and to the alcohol level that increase very quickly with the heat!

– The Toaka Gasy

“Toaka gasy” means Malagasy alcohol that is to say, a local alcohol and homemade. The “rotgut” is often distilled illegally in the bush, from various components but mostly from sugar cane.
Only difference with cane alcohol we know: farmers do not control the percentage of alcohol in the drink: a liter of the beverage can reach nearly 75% of pure alcohol (75 °) which can be very dangerous for the untrained consumer.

– The betsabetsa

Palm wine produced mainly on the East Coast from the fruit and bark. They are found in most small grocery bush.

– Rum

Drink heavily consumed throughout the island. There are also a multitude of smaller brands cheap, with evocative names: “Turbo 2″, “Cazanove” “Boom Boom”, “Sambo” etc… Among classic rums, we can mention the rum of Dzamandzary (Nosy Be), that of Ambilobe (Port Saint-Louis) and that of the sugar refinery of Maromamy (Brickaville).

– Wine

Some vineyards for producing at the origin some sacramental wine were planted in the late nineteenth century. A tradition perpetuated by the Trappist monks of Maromby. Today vineyards thrive in the Betsileo region (mainly around Ambalavao). Several brands offer red wine, rosé or white among which we can mention: Lazan’ny Betsileo, Château Verger, Grand Cru of Antsirabe, Clos Malaza…

– THB (Three Horses Beer)

This is the most consumed beer in the country. It is found deep into the bush at all temperatures!!!
